Corolla's Busiest Off-Season Weekend Is Also the Lighthouse's Last

October 22, 2026

The Currituck Beach Lighthouse's 2026 season ends on Monday, November 30. It is closed on Thanksgiving Day. That leaves Friday, November 27 through Monday, November 30 as the final four days of climbing this year. Those are also the days Whalehead opens its Christmas Craft Village and starts its Candlelight Christmas Tours, and Historic Corolla Village holds its own two-night Christmas event. For one weekend, Corolla's holiday season and its lighthouse season run side by side.

This post publishes about five and a half weeks before the lighthouse closes. That's enough time to decide which version of the last climb you want.

Four Climbing Days, Not Five

Thanksgiving Day is the gap. The lighthouse and its Museum Shop are open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through November 30, weather permitting. The schedule lists three reasons for closing: thunder, big storms, and Thanksgiving Day. The Thursday closure means the long weekend's climbing days start on Friday, the same morning Whalehead opens its craft fair.

A few rules decide how that weekend goes:

  • A climb costs $13. You pay at the front of the lighthouse with cash, check or credit card.
  • Advance and online tickets are not available. Everyone who wants a final climb that weekend buys at the same door on the same days.
  • Climbers must be 4 or older.
  • "Weather permitting" applies all season. Late November weather can close the stairs on any of those four days, and only four remain.

That last rule matters more than it does in June. A storm on a summer Saturday costs a day out of a season that runs from March 21. A storm on November 28 costs a quarter of the time left.

The lighthouse is worth the trip for longtime residents too. Outer Banks Conservationists, which runs the site, notes that it was the last brick-and-mortar lighthouse built in North Carolina. Its brick was left unpainted so it would serve as a daytime marker that looked different from the other lighthouses on the coast. It holds a first-order Fresnel lens, the largest of the seven sizes, and its 20-second flash can be seen from 18 nautical miles.

How Thanksgiving Week Stacks Up

Here is the weekend in order. It shows how much is scheduled for those four days and how much of it shares hours with the lighthouse.

  1. Thursday, November 26. The Corolla Thanksgiving Day Wild Turkey 5K/1 Mile starts at Whalehead. The quarter-mile fun run goes at 8 a.m., and the 5K and 1-mile races start at 8:15 a.m. The lighthouse stays closed all day.
  2. Friday, November 27, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. The free Christmas Craft Village opens at Whalehead in Historic Corolla Park. The lighthouse is open 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.
  3. Friday, November 27, 4 to 8 p.m. Corolla Village Christmas begins in Historic Corolla Village. It's free, with local artists, live music, food vendors and Santa.
  4. Friday, November 27, 5 to 6:30 p.m. Whalehead's first Christmas Candlelight Tour of the season runs, by reservation only.
  5. Saturday, November 28. The lighthouse runs 9 to 5 again, Corolla Village Christmas returns from 4 to 8 p.m., and the Candlelight Tour repeats from 5 to 6:30 p.m.
  6. Sunday, November 29 and Monday, November 30. The lighthouse is open its usual hours with none of the scheduled events above. Monday is the final day of the 2026 season.

The list makes Friday and Saturday the crowded end of the weekend. Sunday and Monday are the open end. Someone who wants the craft fair, the village event and a climb in one outing needs Friday or Saturday. Someone who wants only the climb gets the same tower on Sunday or Monday without three events going on around it.

The Hour When Everything Overlaps

On Friday and Saturday, 4 to 5 p.m. is the busiest hour in Corolla's off-season calendar. Corolla Village Christmas opens at 4. The lighthouse doesn't close until 5. On Friday, the Craft Village at Whalehead has only just wrapped up at 4. As the lighthouse closes, the Candlelight Tours begin across the way at Whalehead.

That gives an afternoon climb a natural sequence: up the tower before 5, then down into the village as the lights and music start. On Friday, a Craft Village visit fits in before both.

The Candlelight Tours need the most planning. Outer Banks This Week's listing shows them on Friday and Saturday evenings from 5 to 6:30 p.m., starting November 27 and 28 and continuing through December 18 and 19. Admission is $20 per person. Reservations are required by phone at (252) 453-9040, and tickets are nonrefundable. The tour shows the mansion in period holiday décor, with a performance on its original Steinway piano and a holiday treat at the end. Thanksgiving weekend is the only weekend when a tour overlaps with the lighthouse season. The Northern Outer Banks Christmas in Corolla page lists the same run through December 19 but marks every date as sold out. Call Whalehead directly before building an evening around a tour slot.

Corolla Village Christmas takes no planning. The Kind Cup presents it, The Northern Outer Banks sponsors it, admission is free and no tickets are required. One version of the Northern Outer Banks listing shows November 27 to 29 in its headline, but its own schedule and the event's website give only Friday and Saturday, 4 to 8 p.m. Plan on two nights, not three.

November Before the Holiday Weekend

The weeks before Thanksgiving are a different kind of lighthouse season. The tower keeps the same 9-to-5 hours every day from now through November 30, apart from Thanksgiving Day and weather closures. A climb on a weekday in early November has no craft fair or village event scheduled alongside it. If the climb itself is what you're after, those weeks give you the tower on its own.

Early November has one major event, and it's on the mainland. The Corolla Wild Horse Fund holds its Fall Open House on Saturday, November 7, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Betsy Dowdy Equine Center in Grandy. The day includes farm visits, a chance to meet rescued Banker horses, and two screenings of The Secret of Corolla. The event listing has the details. Those are the same wild horses that Corolla residents share their stretch of beach with, shown at the rescue farm where some of them live.

The Outer Banks Center for Wildlife Education in Historic Corolla Park suits weekdays in particular. Its listed seasonal hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., and county holidays can change the daily schedule. Programs are free but require registration. The center closes on weekends and may close on holidays, so a weekday in early or mid-November is the easiest time to pair it with a lighthouse climb. Check before counting on it during Thanksgiving week.

Where to Sit Down Between Stops

The village has places to eat and drink right in the middle of all this. The Kind Cup Coffee & Art, the artist-run cooperative that presents Corolla Village Christmas, is at 1129 Corolla Village Road. Corolla Village BBQ shares that address. The Kind Cup puts coffee and local art next to the event it runs. Corolla Village BBQ is the obvious lunch stop between a morning at the Craft Village and an afternoon climb. Neither business posts its off-season hours, so call ahead on a holiday weekend.

For a sit-down dinner after the village closes at 8, The Local OBX is a newer option at 520 Old Stoney Road, beside Northern Outer Banks Brewing Company. A July 2026 roundup of new Outer Banks restaurants from Outer Banks This Week describes lunch and dinner, a full bar, takeout and outdoor seating. Its takeout option also helps on Thanksgiving weekend, when a family may be split between the village event and a quiet evening at home.

If you're hosting guests that weekend, the Corolla Village Inn at 1149 Persimmon Street is in the historic village itself.

Choosing Your Last Climb

The calendar gives three distinct options. A weekday in early or mid-November gets you the climb with nothing else scheduled around it, plus a weekday visit to the Wildlife Education Center. Friday or Saturday of Thanksgiving weekend gets you the climb as the first stop of the busiest afternoon of the off-season, with the village lighting up at 4. Sunday or Monday gets you the year's last climbs with no events scheduled. If you skip Monday, November 30, the next climb is in the 2027 season.

Our team works out of Roanoke Island, and Thanksgiving week along the northern beaches is the kind of local timing we follow all year.
