Sailfish Drive is quiet by 9 p.m., the charter fleet slips out before you're awake, and the loudest thing on the water is usually a heron. Then the second week of August arrives and the neighborhood changes shape.
The week of the Pirate's Cove Billfish Tournament is not a good week to leave. It is a good week to know exactly when to be on your own dock, when to walk over to The Pavilion, and when to let the professionals have the marina to themselves. This is a resident's timing guide, not a visitor's promo. If you own here, the tournament rewards you differently than it rewards anyone else.
What's On The Water, And When
The 2026 calendar is stacked into a single seven-day block. Two distinct competitions run back to back out of the same basin.

The main event runs August 8–14, 2026 out of Pirate's Cove Marina in Manteo, with access to the same Gulf Stream grounds off Oregon Inlet that produce some of the heaviest blue marlin weighed on the East Coast. The final scoring day, Friday August 14, runs from morning through mid-afternoon on the docks. The Three Windows That Matter
The mistake residents make in their first tournament week is treating it as a single event. It is three distinct windows on repeat, and each has a different feel.
Pre-Dawn Departure, Roughly 5:30 to 7:00 A.M.
The fleet leaves in a staggered procession toward Oregon Inlet. If your unit faces the basin, you will not sleep through it, and that is the point. Coffee on the balcony while a hundred sportfish boats idle out of a protected, deep water, full-service harbor consisting of over 194 slips, with a charter dock of sportfish boats that ranks as one of the world's finest is the sort of morning you cannot manufacture the rest of the year. Bring a jacket. The sound side is cooler than the beach at that hour.
Weigh-In Return, Roughly 3:00 to 6:00 P.M.
This is the window most residents underuse. Boats come back heavy or empty, and you can tell which is which from the flag pattern before they reach the scale. If you want to see fish weighed, walk over. If you want to keep the afternoon clear, this is exactly the window to run errands off the island because the Manteo-Nags Head Causeway starts to load with spectators heading in.
After Scoring, Roughly 7:00 P.M. Onward
The Pavilion takes over. The 13,000 square foot waterfront venue at Pirate's Cove Marina, home of the Pirate's Cove Billfish Tournament series, sits with picturesque views of Roanoke Sound. Why The Alice Kelly Days Feel Different
Monday and Tuesday of tournament week do not read like the rest of it. The Alice Kelly Memorial Ladies Only Billfish Tournament is the largest ladies only billfish tournament in the world, started more than 30 years ago by a group of Alice Kelly's friends to honor her memory and financially assist the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group, and is now one of the most popular lady angler events on the East Coast.
The dockside look is a giveaway. Teams come together with beautifully decorated boats and bras to support the impactful work of Interfaith Community Outreach. For scale, the 34th anniversary event in 2023 drew about 1,000 lady anglers on 163 boats, with a $107,950 purse and tens of thousands raised for cancer support. Alice Kelly was a passionate angler and community volunteer who, while battling Hodgkin's Lymphoma and facing out-of-town chemotherapy and radiation, started the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group in 1989 to help others in the same situation. Interfaith Community Outreach absorbed the Outer Banks Cancer Support Group in 2014, and the Alice Kelly tournament now contributes about half of ICO's cancer outreach budget.
The Dining Calculus
You have one restaurant inside the gate, and this is the week when that fact turns into strategy.
Blue Water Grill & Raw Bar at Pirate's Cove Marina brings a sea-to-table experience inspired by Outer Banks fishing culture, with dock access straight from the water, owned by OBX locals Jess and BJ, a husband-and-wife team with over 40 years of combined restaurant experience. Head Chef Tim Gard leads the culinary team on seasonal menus, daily specials, and homemade desserts. Downstairs on the docks, Mimi's Tiki Hut runs seasonally from May through November with drinks, bites, live music, and a leashed-dog-friendly policy right on the marina.
Tactics for the week:
- Reserve dinner upstairs before Monday. The reservation book tightens the moment the Alice Kelly fleet arrives.
- If you did not reserve, treat Mimi's as your dinner venue, not your waiting room. The tiki hut is where the boats you just watched come in are re-lived at the bar.

The Charitable Backbone
The reason the tournament has staying power is not the purse. It is that the purse keeps producing a second number. The weeklong Pirate's Cove Billfish Tournament, through entry fees, raffles and auctions, has raised well more than $1 million for the Pirate's Cove Billfish Tournament Charity Fund, which supports ICO, The Billfish Foundation, the American Diabetes Association NC Chapter and many other local organizations. It is one of seven Governor's Cup tournaments in North Carolina.
