In September the main gate at Jockey's Ridge State Park stays open until 9 p.m. On October 1 that drops to 7 p.m., and on November 1 it drops again to 6 p.m. The Soundside Access on West Soundside Road loses even more. It goes from a 7 p.m. close in September to 5 p.m. from October through December.
The park's fall program calendar runs the other way. This year the ranger-led and partner events at the dune keep landing at dusk or later, and several run well past the posted closing time. In practice, getting onto the tallest active sand dune on the East Coast after dark this fall depends on the date of an event. The gate time doesn't decide it.
The Posted Hours Against the Program Clock
All of the hours below come from the NC State Parks page for Jockey's Ridge. The event times come from the park's listings on the NC Department of Natural and Cultural Resources calendar and from Kitty Hawk Kites.
| Date | Event | Event ends | Posted main-park close that month | Time past close |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Fri., Oct. 16 | In the Park After Dark night hike | 8:15 p.m. | 7 p.m. | 1 hr 15 min |
| Fri., Nov. 6 | Holiday Star Party Food Drive | 8:30 p.m. | 6 p.m. | 2 hr 30 min |
| Sat., Nov. 14 | In the Park After Dark night hike | 6:45 p.m. | 6 p.m. | 45 min |
| Sat., Nov. 28 | Kites with Lights | 7 p.m. | 6 p.m. | 1 hr |
That makes four evenings between mid-October and Thanksgiving weekend when the park has a scheduled reason to stay active past its posted close. Each one has its own rules for getting in.
October 16: The Hike That Starts at Closing Time
The first In the Park After Dark night hike is on Friday, October 16, from 7:00 to 8:15 p.m. It starts at the minute October's posted hours end. The group meets at the pavilion beside the visitor center.
According to the listing, the route follows the park's "newly built boardwalk" to the base of the dunes and then climbs to the ridge. The ranger covers the park's natural and cultural history, ecology and geology along the way. If the weather turns bad, an indoor presentation takes the hike's place.
You have to register ahead of time. Sign-up is by email, at the address on the event listing. For anyone who has only crossed the dune in daylight, this is the first chance this fall to see the boardwalk and the ridge with a guide after the gate would normally close.
November 6: The Longest Night on the Calendar
After the clocks change, the park's evening reach gets longer, not shorter. The Holiday Star Party Food Drive runs Friday, November 6, from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. at the main park, 300 W. Carolista Drive. That's two and a half hours past November's 6 p.m. close, the biggest gap on this fall's calendar.
The evening includes telescopes and children's activities. The park is also collecting food and hygiene donations for Beach Food Pantry. The listing doesn't mention advance registration, which sets it apart from the night hikes. Bring a bag of pantry items with you, because this is the one after-dark evening this fall that's also a donation drive.
November 14: The Same Hike, Ninety Minutes Earlier
The second night hike is on Saturday, November 14, from 5:30 to 6:45 p.m. The October hike is listed in Eastern Daylight Time and this one in Eastern Standard Time. The clock change accounts for one hour of the 90-minute gap between the two start times.
It meets at the same pavilion, follows the same boardwalk route and has the same preregistration rule. It ends 45 minutes after the posted close. If October's Friday night didn't work for you, November's Saturday hike gives you the same walk earlier in the evening.
November 28: The Dune Lit From Above
The season's last scheduled evening comes from Kitty Hawk Kites. Kites with Lights is free and runs Saturday, November 28, from 4 to 7 p.m. at Jockey's Ridge. Illuminated kites 19 to 30 feet long fly over the dune, and the park's solar Christmas tree is lit at 5 p.m. Donations go to the Friends of Jockey's Ridge.
Parking is the detail that matters most here. Kitty Hawk Kites directs attendees to park at the park itself or at Jockey's Ridge Crossing, not along the roadside.
Thanksgiving weekend also brings Hangin' with Santa at the Kitty Hawk Kites store in Jockey's Ridge Crossing. It's outside the park, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Friday, November 27, and 1 to 4 p.m. on Saturday, November 28. The Saturday Santa hours end the same hour the kites go up. That lets one parking spot cover an afternoon at the store and an evening on the dune.
Beyond November 14, the park's own published calendar doesn't list any more programs. So far, Kites with Lights is the last confirmed evening of the year. Any December program would show up on the DNCR calendar first.
The Daytime Dates That Set Up the Evenings
The after-dark programs are the exception this fall. The daytime schedule still has a few events worth putting on the calendar:
- Kayak the Sound, Wednesday, October 14. This paddle launches from Soundside Access. The listing doesn't give a start time. To preregister, email the park with each participant's name and age plus a contact phone number. With Soundside closing at 5 p.m. in October, a midweek paddle is one of the few ways to spend time on that side of the park this month.
- Marine Debris and Beach Sweep, Saturday, October 17, 10 a.m. to noon. It's held at Soundside. Volunteers register by October 15 in teams of 2 to 20.
- Super-NATURAL Creature Feature, Sunday, October 25, 2 to 3 p.m. This Halloween nature program is held in the Visitor Center community room and is aimed at children ages 6 to 12. The two park listings differ on registration, so check the event page before you go.
- Dune hang gliding lessons. Kitty Hawk Kites runs three-hour beginner and kids' lessons on the dune. The company recommends reserving ahead because walk-in space isn't guaranteed.
The Visitor Center keeps the same 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. hours every day. By the start of Kites with Lights at 4 p.m., the Visitor Center's posted hours are over. On the other three evenings it has already been closed for hours. Questions about the exhibits are best handled earlier in the day.
Earlier this year, the Friends of Jockey's Ridge reported four Least Tern nesting sites fenced off from public use. That June post expected the birds to leave by late August or early September, so it doesn't point to any closure this fall.
Coffee Before, Dinner After
The early starts in November line up with two newer Nags Head spots. The Den Coffee Co. opened at 2500 S. Virginia Dare Trail, near milepost 10, sharing space with Farmdog Surf. It serves coffee, tea, smoothies and local pastries. Gather is an oceanfront restaurant at Village Beach Club, 5805 S. Seachase Drive. It's open to the public without a club membership and serves breakfast, lunch, dinner and bar service. Both openings were reported in late July, so confirm fall hours before planning around them.
Here is how the fall works out. On November 6, the gate's posted close is 6 p.m., and the telescopes stay out until 8:30.
Seasonal timing is part of how we think about every corner of the central Outer Banks, from the dune at Jockey's Ridge to the marinas on Roanoke Island.
